Based out of the Twin Cities, Parway Golf is a new player in the golf apparel and accessories market. Even though products have only been available since January 2019, it doesn't take long to see that Parway Golf has a bright future. Parway founder Patrick Carder has already brought several unique aspects to the brand to separate it from the typical golf apparel start-up company, such as creating a partnership with the Minnesota PGA and offering full golf outfits (polo, shorts, hat, belt & socks) to simplify your shopping experience and save money.
With so much going on at Parway Golf in the early stages of their brand, I wanted to get to know the brand better. How it started, what is the brand built on and what the future holds. So we talked with Patrick to get this information and below is what he shared with Golf DSM.
Where did the idea of Parway Golf come from?: The very first Parway became an idea was with a few of my golf friends. I mentioned to them that I had been brainstorming an idea of Midwest Golf Brand. Something that really resonates with the people of this great part of the country. I will admit that my friends were thinking flannels and camp fires, how are going to integrate that into golf apparel. It is more about the lake life, the tall pines, and great people. That was the original idea, but as I started to invest my time into the company it became more apparent that challenging the big box brands on price was easier then expected. No has really pushed these companies to bring affordability to a sport that is known for being expensive. Then we just happened to stumble across the idea of creating scripted outfits. This is gaining a good amount of traction on the PGA and online. We wanted to be in the beginning stages of this idea and concept.
You have formed a partnership with the Minnesota PGA, a type of partnership I don’t often see with small startup golf apparel brands. How did this come about? The partnership with the MPGA is an amazing one that happened really fast considering we just launched at the beginning of the year. My background is in sales, so networking is a big part of who I am. Never miss an opportunity to meet someone new. Nonetheless, through three levels of introduction I was fortunate enough to meet the current CEO of the MPGA. The two companies have a very similar story. They are obviously a very community driven organization and so is Parway Golf. We are so thrilled to be able to work with an organization that is constantly giving back to the community, charity, and to the game of golf. This partnership will certainly help put Parway Golf on the map now and into the future.
Do you have any other products you plan to release in the near future? This is a great time to ask this question. We are currently working on a bunch of new product launches for the MPGA. We will have limited time offers on these releases and will probably go fast. Currently, working on a brand new camouflage pattern polo that will help support a military event the MPGA puts on. Also several different hats that will help support charity, troops, and events. Really excited to get these launched and to be able to help donate back into the community and charity. We will share these products on social media as they come to reality.
One of the unique things about Parway Golf is that you offer a full outfit package to purchase. How did you decide to offer this package as a main product for the brand? There are a couple of answers to this question. First, was the traction that is currently happening around scripted outfits. Many of the professional players out on tour have their outfits predetermined and they just show up and wear them for that event and that day. Seems like a very simple decision making process. That was one of the reasons. We wanted to make the decision making process for men in the golf industry as simple as possible. You select the outfit you like, put in your waist size and shirt size, and the next thing you know is you have a full outfit. It is just that easy. Secondly, we wanted to test the market and how much we could offer these full outfits at. It is amazing how eye opening this process was. We were able to find great manufacturers putting out great products at such affordable prices. Our outfits start as low as $80 and you cannot walk into a big box store without spending over $200 for that same outfit. We are affordable, but did not compromise on quality. We would not allow for that!
How would you describe the look, design and brand image of Parway Golf apparel? Our Generation 1.0 designs were to be very simple and with a muted color palette. We wanted to put designs out there that you could mix and match with your current golf attire. The black, blues, and grays were the go to colors for that first generation of apparel. As we are currently into the Generation 2.0 designs you will see a much different color palette. We will be going big by bringing in the colors of the Midwest. We have partnered up with a well known designer in the golf industry to help create these colors. So excited to share this with the golf community once it all comes together. Please start to watch for this in July.
On to golf courses, what is your favorite course in Minnesota and favorite course you have played outside of Minnesota? Favorite course in Minnesota is Deacons Lodge. Hole number 15 is an amazing Par 5 that has that picture perfect Midwest look and feel. If you haven’t tried the course please do. It was designed by Arnold Palmer and is a great 18 holes of golf. Outside of Minnesota would be We Ko Pa in Arizona. A public course with fantastic challenges. The course sits up high on the side of a mountain and has tremendous views on every hole.
You have gotten some products into Pro Shops, are you looking to increase your work with golf courses? And are you looking to keep that local or to expand beyond Minnesota? We have been fortunate to land some great deals with golf courses in Minnesota. We will continue to work with as many as possible in and outside of Minnesota. As we enter into the fall season we will be out working with more and more golf courses outside of Minnesota. We hope to be in your local pro shop soon! Look for us at pro shop near you in the very near future!
What would be the simplest phrase to describe Parway Golf? A brand built with the Midwest Golfer in mind.
