Homewood Golf Course in Ames is a pretty standard short muni course, offering very affordable golf on a easy to manage layout. The mostly flat and open terrain is very welcoming for kids and golfers new to the game. While the course is a Par 34, the yardage is well below a "standard" course.
Homewood's highest green fees (18 holes on the weekend) comes in just under $25. And while it is pretty cheap for anybody to play, they offer a number of deals to youth, seniors and Iowa State students. And to lower the barriers for people to play even more, you can rent a set of clubs for $7. Probably not the latest Ping clubs, but still a great asset to have in the Ames community.
The course is half surrounded be residential neighborhoods and a park, the other half by woods and the Skunk River. The setting is usually quiet and makes for an enjoyable and peaceful round.
With most holes coming in under 350 yards, the driver will not be seeing much action here. Most holes are pretty straight and there are usually few problems if you miss the fairway or green. Another reason why this course is so great for people new to the game. Most holes have one tee box per hole, with the men's tees at the back and the women's at the front. Given the short yardage on the holes there is no need for multiple tee boxes.
If you can get out to the course in the morning or early afternoon on a weekday there is a pretty good chance you will cruise around the course. But once school/work is out or on weekends it can get full. And given the course caters to youth, seniors and new players you should expect play to be a little slower during busy times.
Course conditions are typically good as long as there has been consistent rain. The rough is at a reasonable height and the greens are at a comfortable speed.
Overall a great course to work on your short game if you are a seasoned player or get introduced to the game on a welcoming course. Or if you are just a poor college kid that found a $20 bill in the couch.
If you are visiting Ames and need some post round food and beverage, hop on Duff Avenue and head south 2 miles to the downtown area. There you have several good options including the popular Great Plains, a pizza joint known for their "Denver Style" crust. If you haven't had it before you should give it a try.
