Located across the street from the main course on the north side of Des Moines, The Executive 9 at Woodland Hills is one of the newest courses you will find in central Iowa. The mostly Par 3 layout provides a great venue for kids and beginners to get some on course experience without the difficulty and sometimes stress that comes with starting out on a packed regulation course.
The key to playing this course is heading into it with the right expectations. If you show up looking for a great course to challenge your skills you will be disappointed. The $12 greens fee should prevent those expectations. If you are looking to get in a quick practice round that is a little more exciting than pounding a bucket of range balls I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I was.
The fairways and greens were in decent shape when I have played here, I arrived with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Tee boxes were good enough but can take a beating with so many being on Par 3 holes. There is a lot of new home construction going on in the area and a good deal of unkept areas along the course that prevent it from being a scenic course.
For the most part the course is pretty easy and a lot of what you would expect from an executive type course that is meant to be simple and a great place for beginners and youth. However there are some forced carry holes and other holes that require an accurate tee shot through a narrow opening.
As mentioned this course is very new and will change over the years. But for now I find it to be a very solid option at the entry level price point for golf in the metro.
